On one side, subscription models combine storage, management and aggregation into virtual power plants.

On the other, relatively low-cost AC-coupled batteries are being positioned as accessible residential retrofit solutions.

➡️ They all use batteries.
➡️ But they do not represent the same market.

This is why speaking about a single "battery market" is becoming increasingly misleading.

➡️ Residential standalone storage, subscription models, aggregated flexibility and C&I storage respond to different economic logics.

There is also a familiar precedent.

During the earlier expansion of rooftop PV, new commercial structures appeared around households, including roof rental, third-party investment and revenue-sharing models.

Some created value.

Others showed the risks of commercial models developing faster than the underlying economics were fully understood.

➡️ Residential storage deserves the same scrutiny.

For households, batteries can now be packaged around a relatively simple proposition:
▪️ lower upfront investment,
▪️ monthly payment,
▪️ energy independence,
▪️ backup,
▪️ or participation in flexibility revenues.

The commercial proposition can therefore be standardised quickly.
Its economics cannot.

Ownership, control strategy, degradation and the source of the expected revenue determine whether that proposition remains economically sound over time.

This is where residential and C&I storage increasingly diverge.

That makes the segment attractive.
➡️ It also makes it more exposed to opportunistic market entry.

For manufacturers, the strategic question therefore comes before the product question:
